English Department and Journalism Awards

On Thursday May 1, Hamline celebrated the achievements of their students. The following awards were given by the English Department. Congratulations to all who won!

ELIZA A. DREW PRIZES IN ENGLISH

English Essays:
Nicole Ditter, “The Politics of the Hindenburg Disaster”
Thomas Lawson, “The Perfect Sound & The Radiator’s Hum: Toward an EAI Aesthetic”

Short Story:
Senior Erin Derwin, “Preservation”

EVELYN APITZ MORRIS AWARD

Short Story: Luke Hallbeck, for his short story “Isla Walang Balaklang”editing

GEORGE HENRY BRIDGMAN POETRY PRIZE
1st: Lee Kisling “Clown School in France”
2nd: Anthony Ceballos “Walking Across Soil”


 

Mary Ewing Roatch Scholarships are awarded to English majors who have demonstrated academic excellence in literary criticism. This year’s two Roatch scholarship recipients are Matthew Buck and Jenna Potter.

Vane Scholarship is awarded to a junior or senior English major recommended by the English faculty for academic achievement; this year’s Vane scholarship recipient is Claire Otradovec.

James Thatcher Ritchie Award, is awarded to a junior or senior English major for academic excellence. This year’s recipient is senior Erin Derwin.

Thomas P. Beyer Prize, awarded to English majors who have an excellent scholastic record and demonstrated ability in creative writing. This year’s recipients are Steven Beardsley and Ruth Nelson.


 

Robert and Shirley Bogue Scholarship: Maria Herd
Students who have an interest in journalism, preference to those intending to pursue a career in (print) journalism and/or have worked on the Hamline Oracle or other campus publications.

Earl E. Craven Prize in Journalism: Don Allen
A student who is a staff member of a campus publication who has raised the standards of campus journalism.

Eliza A. Drew Prize in Communications
Best Editorial: Don Allen, “Hoodlum Manifesto of the Achievement Gap”
Best News Story: Jena Felsheim, “Her Bark and Your Bite”
